A big part of our mission is to provide the latest information about health, nutrition and wellness to our community. So we invite top local experts and educators, including natural chefs, holistic nutritionists, acupuncturists, herbalists, and naturopathic doctors to share their knowledge with you in classes and workshops we host here at New Leaf. The last part of class will be dedicated to longer held stretching poses (Yin), and a final restorative pose to start the day refreshed!

Through preparation of various condiments, entrees, and side dishes, you’ll experience Ayurveda’s six tastes, phenomenally delicious recipes, and get a sense for which foods are best for your body type. About the Instructor: Talya became a Certified Ayurvedic Practitioner through the Dhyana School of Therapeutics in Sebastopol in 2003. She was the first Ayurvedic Chef at DeAnna Batdorff’s Pancha Karma Center, where she helped transform the lives of clients & students by sharing cooking skills, nutritional know-how, personalized Ayurvedic education and coping strategies to foster a healthier relationship with food. Talya has continued to spread her ayurvedic knowledge in Santa Cruz for the past 15 years.

Dim Sum Workshop

With Chef Eric Adema This class will focus on the technique involved in making 5 dim sum favorites.  We will roll out dough and hand press: vegan sweet pea & mushroom Har Gow or “crystal dumplings,” spicy shrimp & scallop shu mai,  pork xiao long bao or “soup dumplings,” BBQ chicken Char Sui Bao or ”steamed buns,” and Hong Kong style egg custard tarts.  The bamboo steamers will be going so we can feast on our creations throughout the whole class.  Beer & wine pairing will be available, and recipes will be provided for doughs, fillings, & dipping sauces.  About the Instructor: Chef Eric Jan Adema first learned his passion for food while cooking his great grandmother’s recipes with his mother as a kid. In 1989 his family took over the Boulders Inn in Connecticut, and by age 24 he became the head chef . In 2003, Eric moved to San Francisco where he worked as a chef & restaurant consultant for over 10 years. He now lives in Boulder Creek .

About the Instructor: Madia cultivated her creative side with colored pencils and has only recently branched out to watercolor, a new and exciting medium. Wellness Lecture with Dr. Danette Sutton Do you have questions about some of the ingredients in the products you are buying? Do you know what the difference between ascorbic acid, citric acid and vitamin C is?  This class will teach you how to read food labels, recognize the most and least desirable ingredients and easily identify a healthier choice in a matter of seconds with knowing four basic rules to shop by. We will discuss common terms, manufacturing processes and what to avoid while shopping as well. Bring a package you have questions about to share. We will pull a few items from the shelves here as well!

About the Instructor: Erin’s studies started over 13 years ago when she ventured down the path of holistic healing and attended Bauman College of Holistic Nutrition. After graduation, Erin began working closely with individual clients, focusing on women and hormonal balance. She then enrolled in the Institute of Women's Health, a year-long program, studying in detail women's health and coaching. It is Erin’s goal to help empower women throughout their cycles.
